ARTIST'S INSPIRATION
Salt was the original base of Venetian trade. Any ship embarking from Venetian ports had to return with a stash of her white gold. Profits from this lucrative trade were reinvested into shipbuilding. Venetians sent out diplomats and pushed to create one of the most competitive fleets of the day. They had to keep a close eye on the waters; the Saracen fleets from Sicily would creep uncomfortably close to their shores from the south, while the Slav expansion and pirates along the Dalmatia coast could sever their access to the Adriatic. Yet, each year, she grew stronger.
