In as early as the 10th century, tens of thousands of visitors flooded to Venice for its rousing boat races, masked balls, and florid parties. By the 18th century Venetians extended the Carnevale season to run for 6 months of the year.
Audiences threw flowers for thousands of jugglers, acrobats, dancing animals, and magicians; they gasped in terror while rope-walkers slid across a fine wire between the Campanile and the Ducal Palace; they jumped for safety as bulls were madly chased throughout the city.
When exhausted, sightseers lounged in gondolas heaping with gold and crimson fabrics, or indulged in wines and bubbly, sculpted marzipan sweets, pinnacles of meringues, and excessively delicious, deep-fried and sugared pastries, like frittelle and crostoli. Ordinary life, in any moment, truly became extraordinary.
