ARTIST'S INSPIRATION
During the 5th Century, the Roman Empire was beginning to collapse. Dissatisfied, nomadic barbarians squirming on its edges rose up against it. These barbi, or “foreigners” fearlessly marched over the Alps and into the sunny lands of Italy. They fought with unabashed violence down through the Italian peninsula. Being from landlocked areas, few barbarians knew how to swim or handle a boat. So, many stealthy Roman populations strung along the shores fled into the lagoon and waited until each gruesome raid stormed by. The barbi ruthlessly pushed southward and tried to claim Rome, the centre of the universe at that time. After each wave of attack, the overwrought lagoon refugees would return home to resume their quotidian way of life. However, some stayed on in the lagoon....this was the beginning of Venice.
